Why Apollo, and Why Now?

Brad Blankenship

One question I hear a lot—from education colleagues, peers, and investors alike—is, “Why Apollo, and why now?” Right behind it is usually, “Do you really want to launch a new student information system?”

Fair questions, especially given the grip legacy SIS vendors have on the market. These are systems that have been around for decades, often delivering subpar user experiences and locking districts into outdated technology.

At my core, I love building great software for education. But my passion runs deeper than code and features. I care about building mission-driven companies that make schools more efficient, processes more seamless, and user experiences more enjoyable. I care about listening to real users, solving real problems, and delivering exceptional service.

At Apollo, we’ve set four guiding priorities—principles I’ve used to build successful EdTech companies in the past and will continue to champion here.

First, our goal is deceptively simple: build software that’s a joy to use. Not “good enough,” not “bearable,” but delightful. That means intuitive interfaces, thoughtful workflows, and zero guesswork. If users need a manual to figure something out, we’ve failed. There shouldn’t be five different ways to perform the same task—just one, and it should be obvious. When we miss the mark, we listen and fix it. We aim for polish and precision every time. If we can’t do it right, we don’t do it at all.

Second, we strive to be the easiest vendor to work with. Too many software companies are opaque and difficult to engage with. Not us. We’re upfront about pricing. We don’t change quotes based on zip codes or perceived budgets. Every team member, from sales to support, is accountable and empowered to act. Our contracts are plain-English. No hidden clauses. No games. When we plan to roll out a new feature, we’ll tell you exactly when. If things shift, you’ll hear it from us—early and often.

Third, Apollo must be enterprise-grade—without the enterprise-level complexity. A powerful platform doesn’t need to be overwhelming. In fact, we believe the best systems feel simple on the surface because they’re thoughtfully designed underneath. We hide complexity by customizing workflows per district, streamlining menus, and eliminating unnecessary steps. We challenge outdated design norms, predict user behavior, and constantly revise. The result? Clean, effective, user-centric software that schools actually enjoy using.

Lastly, we deliver white-glove service—every single time. If our software adds stress during back-to-school season, we’ve failed. Our team is trained to respond quickly, solve issues thoroughly, and treat every user with empathy and respect. Whether it’s a front office staff member, a counselor, or an IT administrator, we know they’re managing an enormous workload. We’re here to help, not hinder. That means answering phones, listening carefully, staying proactive, and never losing sight of the people behind the platform.

So, why SIS—and why now?

Over the past two decades, I’ve founded and led several EdTech companies. Despite all the progress in cloud computing, AI, and UX, the SIS space remains stuck in the past. Most of today’s dominant platforms are built on 1990s client-server models that were web-enabled—no fundamental transformation. That’s left districts with slow updates, rigid data models, cumbersome interfaces, and little innovation. Meanwhile, expectations have changed dramatically. Schools need faster, more intelligent, more connected systems. Parents expect seamless communication. Staff expect intuitive tools. And students deserve better.

I’ve often heard, “Better is the enemy of good enough.” But honestly, who wakes up aiming to be “good enough”? That mindset comes from too many years spent in uninspiring systems with no room to dream bigger. Unfortunately, many EdTech vendors have stopped trying to innovate. They’ve settled for “good enough” because they assume customers won’t switch. That complacency is precisely why we’re here.

Apollo is our chance to rewrite the rules. We’re building a next-generation student data platform that’s extensible, scalable, and AI-powered—designed to make schools more efficient and improve student outcomes. We’re here to help districts rekindle the passion and possibility of what technology can do for education. We’re not content with “good enough.” And we believe our partners aren’t either.

So when someone asks me, “Why Apollo?”, I tell them this: because schools deserve better. And if you’re ready for something better, I invite you to join us on this journey. Let’s build something exceptional—together. Your district, your community, and your students will be better for it.
